ARCHDES 700 - Advanced Design I
For the final project in this paper, we looked at Cathedral Square in Christchurch. The brief stated that our output must transform the square into a local landmark - with Moller simply leaving us to sit on the phrase "make it iconic".
The cohort was split on whether to reinstate and interact with the Cathedral itself, or to knock it down and create something new. I chose to do both, by creating a memory of the Cathedral through literally imprinting it into a new structure, partly inspired by Rachel Whiteread's casted sculptures.
Here, a concrete blanket is draped over of the Cathedral, where an impression can be made - and once the broken structure is removed, the resultant form allows for an interior experience of an exterior.
Obviously far more realistic at a much smaller scale, the project attempts to question the conservation of an object or structure, and how this might be realised in ways alternative to the traditional approach.
